Where ever you go.. Go with all your heart.

I arrived at Sydney airport and found it was very easy to get into the city centre either by shuttle bus or train. I stayed at Wakeup Sydney Hostel for the duration of my stay (3 weeks) over Christmas and New Year. The hostel is brilliant if you are looking for the party life! It is in a good location, clean and the staff are really helpful. The only downfall is the kitchen and communal area. Both are small and the kitchen is not very well equipped. The hostel holds a city tour which is great to go on when you first hit the city to find your way around - and also to make friends. They also run a Coogee to Bondi walk. This was one of the most beautiful walks I have done in Australia - you discover hidden beaches and coves that you can revisit later if you wish.
Underneath Wakeup is Side Bar, this is where I spent most of my nights! It is free entry to people staying in the hostel and has cheap happy hour prices. There are loads of pubs and bars in Sydney, but most of my time was spent in Abercrombie, Scubar, or Scary Canary.
The Ivy is a one of the biggest clubs in Sydney and holds a backpacker night on a Thursday. I think because I was there at Christmas time it was perhaps busier than normal. It is expensive and they pack it out, but it does have a pool inside. If you want to splash some cash, every Saturday there is a Pacha night which is unreal!

Obviously whilst in Sydney you have to do the ultimate tourist attractions! View the Opera House, walk through the Botanical Gardens, visit Darling Harbor, learn about the Anzac War Memorial, sunbath on Manly beach, feed giraffes at Taronga Zoo, the list goes on.
Christmas day was a bit of a nightmare. There is an annual festival held on Christmas day in Bondi, called Sun Burnt, which plenty of backpackers book. Sun Burnt is not actually held on the beach and it was pretty expensive so a group of us decided to pre cook a Christmas dinner and planned to head down to Bondi beach and get boozy. However, it was a total washout and so we had to compromise with our picnic style Christmas dinner in the hostel kitchen followed by drinks on Darling Harbour! But when the festival goers returned dripping from head to toe and moaning that it was too expensive to stay a good level of drunk we felt we got the better deal. Boxing day made up for the Christmas day let down though! It is tradition in Ireland to go to the races on the 26th 'St Stephens Day' - so as an honorary Irish for the day, I got dolled up and hit Randwick Races. I highly recommend this to backpackers looking to carry on the festivities as international passport holders got free entry! The weather was glorious and the day was full of Champaign, food and betting!

If you are in lucky enough to be in Sydney for NYE I recommended you spend it at Beare Park. From the park you can see half the bridge and 3 - 4 of the firework points. This is where I spent my NYE and it was bloody unreal. You were able to bring your own alcohol and food and therefore it was full of backpackers! Someone brought huge speakers down and the park turned into a full on rave!
